Although It’s Not Flammable, You Can Use Vaseline To Start A Fire
If you’re ever in a bind and need a fire starter for some reason, such as if you’re camping in the rain, Vaseline can help with that. Although the product and other petroleum jelly items are safe and not flammable, you can soak a cotton ball in Vaseline to make a safe and handy fire starter.
When you light the cotton, it starts wicking the petroleum just like a candle does with melted wax. As the Vaseline gets to the end of the cotton fibers, it boils and emits a gas that burns in a controlled and sustained flame. It’s not the petroleum burning; just the gas. And Vaseline also prevents the cotton ball from burning up too quickly, making it great for starting fires.
